Conference for the promotion of Arabic language and culture

In 2014, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan launched the first edition of the Arabic Language Festival. At a time when the Arab world was becoming increasingly significant in Italy’s political, economic and social landscape, the Festival sought to bring Arabic culture closer to students, academics, journalists, professionals, representatives of public life and anyone interested in discovering it beyond common perceptions and stereotypes.

From the very beginning, the Festival was conceived as a space for intercultural dialogue between the two shores of the Mediterranean. Its aim was not only to bring together Arab and European scholars, writers and intellectuals, but also to encourage connections between the cultural world, the business community and local Arab and Italian communities.

The programme combined high-level academic discussions with a rich selection of artistic and cultural events. Leading scholars and intellectuals from the Arab world and Europe were invited to discuss issues related to Arabic language and culture, while theatre, cinema, poetry, music, painting, photography and calligraphy offered accessible and engaging ways for a wider audience to encounter the diversity of Arab artistic expression.

Particular attention was also given to the role of the business and professional communities, recognising that meaningful intercultural dialogue and a deeper understanding of other cultures are essential not only for peaceful coexistence, but also for building lasting international relationships and creating opportunities for constructive economic cooperation.

The first edition thus laid the foundations for the Festival as a meeting place between different worlds: Arab and Italian communities, students and academics, writers and artists, schools and universities, civil society, the media, religious and cultural institutions, as well as representatives of the economic and diplomatic spheres.

This first edition established the Festival’s enduring mission: to create bridges between cultures through language, knowledge and artistic expression and to make Arabic culture accessible to a broad and diverse public.
